Team USA qualified for the Davis Cup finals
Team USA, the most successful Davis Cup team with 32 titles in history, advanced to the last eight of the tournament, having reached this stage just once in the last 5 years. This happened after a 3-0 victory over the Slovakia team, which guaranteed the Americans one of the first two places in the standings of Group “C” in Zhuhai (China).
The Americans were without US Open finalist Taylor Fritz and semifinalist Frances Tiafoe, but Brandon Nakashima and Mackenzie McDonald had wins over Jozef Kovalik and Lukas Klein. Brandon Nakashima Jozef Kovalik by 2-0 (6:3, 6:3), and Mackenzie McDonald prevailed over Lukas Klein by 2-0 (6:4, 6:3).
In doubles, Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek defeated Norbert Gombos and Lukas Klein by 2-1 (6:7, 7:6, 10:1) for a 3-0 victory.
The 16 nations have been divided into four groups in Manchester, Bologna, Valencia and Zhuhai, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the last eight of the Davis Cup, which will be held in Malaga, Spain, in November.
