Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek is a Polish professional tennis player, who was ranked as the world’s number one in women’s singles by the WTA, having held the position for a total of 125 weeks and placing her 7th on the all-time list. She has won five Grand Slam singles titles, including four-times the French Open and once the US Open. Iga Swiatek has won 22 singles WTA titles, including the 2023 WTA Finals and ten WTA 1000 titles. In 2024, she became also an Olympics medalist, winning the bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Iga Swiatek was born on May 31, 2001, in Warsaw, Poland. She started in tennis at an early age and showed spectacular talent and skills. She began competing in ITF Junior Circuit events in 2015 and won the 2018 French Open girls’ doubles title and the 2018 Wimbledon girls’ singles title. She is also a semi-finalist at the Junior Orange Bowl in 2014 and won the titles at the European Junior Championships in 2015 and Canadian Open Junior Championships in 2016.

Iga Swiatek started her professional career in 2016 and immediately won her first ITF title at the $10,000 W15 Stockholm (Sweden). In 2017, she won another two titles at the $15,000 Bergamo (Italy) and $15,000 Gyor (Hungary).

Iga Swiatek continued playing at the ITF Circuit in 2018, winning the title at the $15,000 W15 Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt), $25,000 W25 Pelham, AL (USA), $60,000 Budapest (Hungary), and $60,000 W60 Montreux (Switzerland).

Iga Swiatek made her Grand Slam debut in 2019, playing at the Australian Open main draw and reached the second round. During the season she reached her first WTA final at the WTA 250 SAMSUNG open presented by corner in Lugano, Switzerland, but lost to Polona Hercog (Slovenia). Iga Swiatek reached also the fourth round of the French Open / Roland Garros and the third round of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open / Rogers Cup. With her great achievements during the season, she entered in the world’s Top 100 of the WTA ranking.

In 2020, Iga Swiatek kept her form and started the season at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round. She also played in the third round of the US Open, before making her big breakthrough in the world’s tennis, winning the title at the French Open / Roland Garros. This skyrocket her to world’s No 17 at the end of the short season, hampered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Iga Swiatek continued playing on high level in 2022, winning the titles at the WTA 500 Adelaide International and WTA 1000 Rome Open, as well as reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open / Roland Garros. She finished the season as world’s No 9 and played also in the WTA Finals Guadalajara but did not overcome the group stage.

After the retiring of Ashleigh Barty in 2022, Iga Swiatek dominated the world’s tennis, climbing to world’s number one on April 3rd for the first time in her career. Even before taking the top position of the WTA ranking, she made a fantastic performance, reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Adelaide International and the Australian Open, while in February and March won the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open, WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and WTA 1000 Miami. But in April she continued being unbeaten and won the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, WTA 1000 Rome Open, and the French Open / Roland Garros. Thus, Iga Swiatek recorded as series of 35 winning streak, before crashing in the third round of Wimbledon. By the end of the season, she won the US Open and the WTA 500 Cymbiotika San Diego Open, but also was the runner-up at the WTA 500 AGEL Open. Iga Swiatek finished the season as world’s number one and played at the WTA Finals Fort Worth, but was knocked out at the semi-finals.

In 2023, Iga Swiatek continued being the top female tennis player in the world, winning the title sat the WTA 500 Qatar TotalEnergies Open, WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, French Open / Roland Garros, WTA 250 BNP Paribas Poland Open, WTA 1000 China Open, and WTA Finals Cancun. She also was the runner-up at the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and WTA 1000 Madrid Open. During the season, Iga Swiatek lost for a while her top position in the WTA Ranking to Aryna Sabalenka for seven weeks but regained it on November 5th and finished the season as the world’s number one again.

Iga Swiatek started the 2024 season hesitantly, being knocked out in the third round of the Australian Open, but quickly returned to form and won the titles at the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open and WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, as well as reached the semi-finals at the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. On clay she made a fantastic performance by winning the titles at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, WTA 1000 Rome Open, and the French Open / Roland Garros, and only missing to win for a third time in a row the title of the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, being knocked out in the semi-finals by Elena Rybakina. During the grass court season, Iga Swiatek played only at Wimbledon, but lost in the third round to Yulia Putintseva, before returning again on clay to play at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where won the bronze in the tennis tournament. She played at the WTA 500 Cincinnati Open and the US Open, but did not overcome the semi-finals and the quarter-finals, respectively, before complaining from fatigue and missed the Asian tour. Thus, Iga Swiatek lost her top position in the WTA ranking and returned to play only at the WTA Finals Riyadh, where did not overcome the group stage although had two wins and one loss.
