Jannik Sinner started the defense of his ATP 500 China Open title after a three-set comeback
The world’s number one Jannik Sinner had a tough match but made a fantastic comeback against Nicolas Jarry (Chile) in the first round of the ATP 500 China Open with a prize money of 3.7 million USD. The Italian tennis star, who is defending his title from the tournament, prevailed by 2-1 (4:6, 6:3, 6:1) in just under two hours of play.
Jannik Sinner allowed a break in the seventh game of the first set for 3:4, then managed to save a set point, but in the second Nicolas Jarry closed the set at 6:4.
The second set started strongly for Jannik Sinner, who broke in the second game and took a quick 3:0 lead. Then he took his serves, which was enough for him to level the score after 6:3.
In the third set, Jannik Sinner was even more convincing, giving only one game to his Chilean opponent – 6:1. He struggled on serve, with Nicolas Jarry hitting 12 aces to just one for the Italian, but Jannik Sinner was convincing on his second serve and won 82% of the points. He also took fewer winners (15-17), but the South American made far more unforced errors – 46 vs 11.
Adrian Mannarino (France) defeated Lorenzo Sonego (Italy) by 2-1 (1:6, 6:2, 6:3).
Pavel Kotov (Russia), playing under a neutral flag, also qualified for the second round of the ATP 500 China Open, eliminating Zhou Yi (China) by 2-1 (1:6, 6:3, 7:5).
