Two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell requested a voluntary provisional suspension for doping

Two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell (Australia) has chosen to enter a voluntary provisional suspension under the Tennis Anti-Doping Program, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said.

The agency said Max Purcell, currently ranked 12th in the men’s doubles world rankings, admitted a rule violation related to the use of a “prohibited method” and requested a provisional suspension on December 10, which took effect two days later.

“The period served while serving a provisional suspension will be credited against any future sanction”, says the statement of the ITIA, without giving further details.

The 26-year-old tennis player, who won the Wimbledon doubles title in 2022 and the Australian Open doubles title this year, is banned from playing, training or attending any event administered by tennis’ governing bodies or national associations. The length of the voluntary suspension was not specified by the ITIA.

Max Purcell has issued a statement after testing positive for a banned substance. The Australian tennis player has been provisionally suspended under the Tennis Anti-Doping Program, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced.

“As announced today by the ITIA, I have voluntarily accepted a Provisional Suspension after unknowingly receiving an intravenous infusion of vitamins in excess of the 100ml limit. Until last week, when I received medical documentation from the clinic showing that the volume of the intravenous injection I received was more than 100ml, I was fully confident that I had done everything to ensure compliance with WADA rules and procedures. However, the records show that the volume was greater than 100ml, even though I told the medical clinic that I was a professional athlete and needed the volume to be below 100ml. This news has shocked me because I pride myself on being an athlete who always makes sure that everything is safe for WADA. I have voluntarily provided this information to the ITIA and have been as transparent as possible in my attempts to put the entire this situation. I look forward to getting back on the court soon”, wrote Max Purcell on social media.

Max Purcell, ranked 12th in the doubles rankings, admitted to violating Article 2.2 of the Tennis Anti-Doping Program (use of a prohibited method) and requested a provisional suspension on December 10.
