Olympic singles champion and Australian Open finalist Qinwen Zheng (China) will begin her 2025 Grand Slam season in January after deciding to skip the United Cup mixed team tournament that starts next week, announced the 22-year-old tennis player.
Qinwen Zheng was defeated in the final of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in 2024 by Aryna Sabalenka, but enjoyed a successful season after winning gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics and titles in Tokyo and Palermo. The Chinese player played 68 matches last season.
“After a long season for me in 2024, I need a few extra weeks of rest, recovery and good training to prepare”, wrote Qinwen Zheng on her Instagram account. “I had a fantastic time at the United Cup in January this year, so I will miss the event very much. However, I am excited to return to Australia soon and see you in Melbourne in a few weeks”, added she.
The Chinese team begins its participation in the United Cup tournament, which will be held from December 27 to January 5, in Perth with a match against Brazil.
The Australian Open will start on January 12.
