Germany has qualified for the semi-finals of the Davis Cup
Germany has qualified for the semi-finals of the Davis Cup team tennis tournament, the unofficial men’s world team championship, in Malaga, Spain.
The Germans overcame 2022 champions Canada by 2-0 in their quarter-final clash in the competition and will face the Netherlands in contention to reach the final.
Daniel Altmaier gave Germany the lead in the first singles match after beating Gabriel Diallo after 2-0 (7:6(5), 6:4) in an hour and 57 minutes of play, while Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Denis Shapovalov after a comeback by 2-1 (4:6; 7:5, 7:6(5)) in the second singles match, which lasted two hours and 10 minutes.
The ATP No 88 Daniel Altmaier almost squandered a 5-0 lead in the first set tiebreak but won 7-5 to take the lead, and in the second set he made a key break for 6:4, converting his first match point.
“A dream came true. It’s always a great honor to play for your country”, said Daniel Altmaier after the match.
In the second single, Denis Shapovalov took the lead after a successful first set, but in the second set, Jan-Lennard Struff caught up from 4:5 to 7:5 and equalized. The German tennis player was serving for the match at 5:3 in his favor, but conceded an equalizer at 5:5 and had to go through a tiebreak to reach the victory.
Canada overcame Germany 2-1 at the same stage two years ago en route to the title.
