Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria) dropped out of the US Open 2024 after retiring in the fourth set of his match in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam tournament against Frances Tiafoe (USA).

The Bulgarian player lost the first set with 3:6, but then won heroically in the second set with 7:6(5). The third set started very strong and Grigor Dimitrov played for a complete turnaround, but somewhere around the third game health problems started and Frances Tiafoe won again with 6:3.

The fourth set began with a medical timeout, after which Grigor Dimitrov’s staff urged him to stop, but he wanted to preserve his dignity, even though it put his health at untold risk. Unfortunately, the inevitable happened and the Bulgarian stopped at 1:4, leaving with great disappointment.

In the semi-finals, Frances Tiafoe will play with Taylor Fritz, who won a decisive victory against Alexander Zverev (Germany) with 3-1 (7:6 3:6 6:4 7:6(3)).

This granted the wish of Taylor Fritz, who had wished for a victory for Frances Tiafoe in the hope of an all-American semi-final to guarantee a home representative in the grand final.

Grigor Dimitrov had a 3-1 lead in head-to-head matches with Frances Tiafoe before the start of the match, and in their last match the Bulgarian player was uncompromising.
