Aryna Sabalenka defeated Qinwen Zhang to advanced to the semi-finals of the US Open 2024
Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) prevailed over Paris 2024 Olympics champion Qinwen Zhang (China) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:2) to book her place in the semifinals of the US Open tennis championship. The match between the two lasted 74 minutes, with Aryna Sabalenka hardly facing any competition from the seventh-seeded Chinese player.
The physically powerful Aryna Sabalenka began to dominate from the start, breaking in the second game to take a 3:0 lead. Only then Qinwen Zhang won her serve, but the next three games were again for the tennis player from Belarus, who closed the set 6:1 on her third set point.
The second set did not start differently, as Aryna Sabalenka took her opponent’s serve at the very beginning, and then her own serve for 2:0. The Belorussian player made another break for 4:1, and then closed the set at 6:2 and won the match.
Aryna Sabalenka made 3 aces against the Qinwen Zhang’s 5, but in all other components she was superior to the Asian. Aryna Sabalenka hit 16 winners to 9 for the Chinese player and won 53% of her second serve points.
In the semifinals, Aryna Sabalenka will play against Emma Navarro (USA), and after the match, she joked: “Drinks on me tonight? Drink on me and please give me some support in the next match”.
The world’s number two Aryna Sabalenka has reached the US Open semi-finals for the fourth time in a row, the most since American tennis star Serena Williams, who has done it six times. Last year, Aryna Sabalenka lost in the final to Cori Coco Gauff (USA).
