Danielle Collins changed her mind and won’t retire from the sport
Danielle Collins (USA), who is WTA No 9, has reversed her decision to retire from the sport at the end of the season and has decided to continue playing in 2025. The 30-year-old American announced the news on social networks.
Danielle Collins said she would retire at the end of the 2024 season to start a family after losing in the second round of the Australian Open in January.
“While I was very excited and eager to wrap up my tennis career on a high note this year and jump headfirst into my next chapter of life, things have not gone as planned”, wrote Danielle Collins in her social network account.
She revealed that she’s been dealing with some health issues over the past few months, including being diagnosed with endometriosis, and hinted that her plans to start a family haven’t turned out as clear as she’d hoped.
“Dealing with endometriosis and fertility is a massive challenge for many women and something that I am actively traversing, but I am fully confident in the team I am working with. It is just going to take longer than I thought”, added she.
Danielle Collins was named in the USA squad for the season-opening United Cup mixed team tournament in Sydney and Perth, suggesting she will be at Melbourne Park for the year’s first Grand Slam in mid-January.
It was at the Australian Open that she achieved her best result when she reached the final in 2022, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty.
In 2024, Danielle Collins won titles in Miami and Charleston, but suffered heatstroke at the Paris 2024 Olympics and crashed out in the first round of the US Open.
“While there are no guarantees in life, I hope to build on my 2024 momentum and keep playing until there is more certainty around my personal fertility journey. The only guarantee for now will be some more epic matches”, concluded the American tennis player.
