Alex Michelsen will replace Daniil Medvedev in the main draw of the ATP 500 Vienna Open
American talent Alex Michelsen will replace Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev in the main draw of the ATP 500 Vienna Open indoor hard court tennis tournament. The tournament has a prize fund of 2.47 million EUR will take place from October 21 to 27.
Daniil Medvedev, the fifth in the world ranking, who is the champion in the 2022 Austrian Open and last season reached the final, withdrew yesterday due to an injury in the area of the right shoulder. He suffered the problem at last week’s ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai, losing in the quarterfinals to world’s number one Jannik Sinner (Italy).
Alex Michelsen, 20, is currently ranked 45th in the world, having made two finals this season at the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open and ATP 250 Infosys Hall of Fame Open, and broke into the top 50 for the first time in August.
Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria), tenth in the ATP ranking, has announced his participation, and at this stage he will be third-seeded. Grigor Dimitrov is a semi-finalist at the ATP 500 Vienna Open in 2022, and the curious thing is that he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the previous two seasons.
Alexander Zverev (Germany) will be the top-seeded and among the other seeded players are Alex de Minaur (Australia) and Alexei Popyrin (Australia), the Americans Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe, Lorenzo Musetti (Italy) and Jack Draper (Great Britain).
Jannik Sinner will not defend his title from last season.
