Stan Wawrinka rolled back the years with a historic success at the ATP 250 Nordic Open in Stockholm
The tennis veteran Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) played a superb match on Thursday night at the ATP 250 Nordic Open to become the oldest quarter-finalist in the history of the tournament in Stockholm. The 39-year-old Swiss tennis player, who participated with a “wild card”, recalled his best days on the court and managed to eliminate Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (Spain) by 2-1 (6:4, 3:6, 7:5). Thus, he achieved back-to-back victories on the ATP Tour for the first time since the 2023 US Open.
Stan Wawrinka twice came back from a break down in the decisive third set, but with a very brave performance fought back to win after two hours and 12 minutes of fierce battle on court.
“I am very happy that I managed to win this match. I faced a very difficult opponent, but my level of play was good and the feeling of achieving two consecutive victories here is great. The atmosphere was amazing, full house. Thank you all for making so much noise”, said Stan Wawrinka.
Stan Wawrinka, a former world’s number three, took advantage of the Spaniard’s weak seventh game before closing out the first set with ease. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina then raised his level and played an almost flawless second set in which he won 89% (16/18) of the first serve points. However, the 25-year-old Spaniard was unable to take advantage of his momentum and the decisive third set offered many emotions to the spectators. In the end, Stan Wawrinka took advantage of an untimely double fault from Alejandro to get a match point, which was enough for him to win this match.
In the next round, the winner of three Grand Slam titles will face the top-seeded Andrey Rublev (Russia). The Russian tennis player started with a definite upset with 2-0 (6:1, 6:4) over Alexandre Mуller (France). Andrey Rublev was perfect in the whole match, during which he scored 17 winners and saved all three break points he faced.
