Frances Tiafoe advanced to the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 Almaty Open after amazing comeback
The top-seeded Frances Tiafoe (USA) made a comeback against Daniel Evans (Great Britain) and qualified for the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 Almaty Open hard court tennis tournament in Kazakhstan. The American tennis player prevailed after a reversal with 2-1 (6:7(10), 7:6(4), 6:3) and achieved his sixth victory in a total of nine matches against his British rival.
Daniel Evans saved two set points in the tiebreak of the first set, then took the lead on his fourth opportunity, winning 10-8 against Frances Tiafoe. The American player came back into the match after another tiebreak, and in the decisive set took a 4:0 lead to complete the match in 2 hours and 42 minutes.
“I just stayed in the match and my opening shot was part of that. I had a lot of aces and started going to the net, taking more risks. I knew I was going to have a big battle and I had prepared myself pretty well. I’m happy with the success”, said Frances Tiafoe after the match.
In the next round, he will play against Aleksandar Vukic (Australia), who eliminated 8th-seeded and 2023 champion Adrian Mannarino (France) after 2-0 (7:6(4), 6:3). In the second set, Aleksandar Vukic served extremely precisely and saved the three break points in favor of his French opponent.
Karen Khachanov (Russia) and Beibit Zhukayev (Kazakhstan) also qualified for the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 Almaty Open. The the third-seeded Russian tennis player prevailed by 2-0 (7:6(2), 7:6(3)) against Otto Virtanen (Finland). Beibit Zhukayev, who is in the ATP No 213, advanced after retiring of the fifth-seeded Tomas Machac (Czech Republic). The Czech tennis player was losing 1:3 in the first set and ended his participation in the match due to an injury.
