Alexander Zverev advanced to the Round of 16 at the US Open after a comeback against Tomas Martín Etcheverry
Alexander Zverev was on the verge of trailing 0-2 sets against Tomas Martín Etcheverry, but instead pulled off a turnaround for a 3-1 (5:7, 7:5, 6:1, 6:3) success en route to the Round of 16 of the US Open.
The match finished shortly after 02:30 after midnight in New York and was very close to the record in this regard, set in 2022 between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner – 02:50.
The 4th-seeded German tennis player had to deal with the pressure of rising expectations for him, especially after the sensational exits of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
However, Alexander Zverev did not allow a new surprise to happen, and the most intense was in the second half of the second set, when he trailed by a break and was in danger of losing it. After seven deuces, the German player made a break with his second set point for 7:5, and Tomas Martín Etcheverry himself missed five opportunities to take the set into a tiebreak.
This proved to be a turning point in the match as Alexander Zverev was by far the more convincing player on the court in the third and fourth sets. He recorded a victory in 3 hours and 35 minutes, proceeding to the Round of 16 with increased confidence because, unlike in past years, this time he did not exhaust himself with five-set battles in the first rounds of a Grand Slam tournament.
Alexander Zverev is a big favorite in the Round of 16 duel with Brandon Nakashima. Then in the quarterfinals, he will play with the winner between Taylor Fritz or Casper Ruud.
