Jannik Sinner won the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai title
Jannik Sinner won his seventh title for 2024 and third of the Masters after defeating Novak Djokovic at the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai tennis tournament by 2-0 (7:6(4), 6:3).
The world’s number one was more efficient and more sustainable in all the important indicators, and he imposed an advantage with aggression from the bottom of the court. Novak Djokovic’s tactics of changing the direction of the serves early and going to the net often worked until the tiebreak of the first set, but after that his physical reservoir was not enough to look for a turnaround.
Novak Djokovic could not keep the tradition of winning at least one ATP tournament in the season since 2006, and triumphing with his career title number 100 is postponed. By reaching the final, however, he probably did enough to guarantee himself a place at the ATP Finals. His lead over ninth-ranked Alex de Minaur in this year’s rankings is 605 points, and over tenth-ranked Grigor Dimitrov – 675. Even in the semifinals in Shanghai against Taylor Fritz, Novak Djokovic had a problem with his right hip, which probably worsened his chances in the second set.
Jannik Sinner was hesitant on serve, but only in his first two serves, which Novak Djokovic did not take advantage of. From then and until the end of the match, the Italian tennis player was not only convincing, but also clearly built an advantage over the rival in this indicator.
Novak Djokovic himself was flawless until the tiebreak in the first set, but then made decisions on the court that didn’t work (like going to the net). However, they were obviously provoked either by fatigue or by some pain in the right thigh, as was the case in the semi-final with Taylor Fritz.
Jannik Sinner had an unpleasant moment at 4:5 and 0-30 on his serve in the first set, but he saved himself with direct points from the opening serve. In the tiebreak, he dominated from the start with a 4-0 lead and converted a second set point, making a decisive early break for 3-1 in the second half.
Jannik Sinner secured two match points without any difficulty and with an ace on the diagonal from the right half of the court closed the final and recorded another famous victory in his career.
