Jannik Sinner advanced to the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai but missed the match with Carlos Alcaraz
The world’s number one Jannik Sinner (Italy) qualified for the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai tennis tournament after defeating the fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev (Russia) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:4) in 83 minutes of play.
The top-seeded Jannik Sinner easily won the first set, giving only a game to the opponent, and in the second, he made a key break in the fifth game and closed the match after 6:4.
In the semi-finals, the Italian player will face the Czech tennis talent Tomas Machac, who ended the winning streak of Carlos Alcaraz and surprisingly defeated him in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Tomas Machac won by 2-0 (7:6(5), 7:5). The Czech achieved the second most significant victory of his career, and specifically in 2024, after he defeated Novak Djokovic in the semifinals in Geneva.
Tomas Machac scored 20 winners in the first set. In the second set, Carlos Alcaraz recovered a passive from one break, but was broken for 5:6. The Czech player showed enviable composure and efficiency and then closed the match with a service game at zero.
Carlos Alcaraz ended his winning streak of 12 matches, and for the 14th time he played in the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. Thus, he missed chances to return to the world’s number one by the end of the season.
