The world’s number one Jannik Sinner (Italy) and his rival and world’s number three Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) started at the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai hard-court tournament with victories.

Carlos Alcaraz came out first on the court and prevailed over Shang Juncheng (China) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3). It came just three days after the Spaniard’s success over Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP 500 China Open tournament in Beijing.

“I only had time to do one training session before the match”, revealed Carlos Alcaraz.

In the next round, he will face another Chinese player – Wu Yibing.

Jannik Sinner defeated Taro Daniel (Japan) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:4) at his start in the tournament.

“This win was very important for me”, he said. In the third round of the tournament, Jannik Sinner will face Tomas Martín Etcheverry (Argetina), who prevailed over Botic van de Zandschulp (Netherlands) by 2-1 (7:6 (5), 5:6, 7:5) in 3 hours and 43 minutes on the court that was the longest match in the history of the tournament.

The sixth-seeded Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev lost to Jakub Mensík (Czech Republic) by 1-2 (7:6(7), 4:6, 3:6).
