Swiss tennis veteran Stan Wawrinka became the oldest tennis player to reach a ATP Masters 1000 win after defeating
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (France) by 2-0 (7:6(2), 7:6(6)) in the first round in ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai in an hour and 50 minutes of play.

Stan Wawrinka won at the age of 39, exactly 18 years older than his opponent. The Swiss tennis player saved a set point in both sets before celebrating the final success. The previous oldest player to clinch and win at the ATP Masters 1000 was Ivo Karlovic (Croatia) in 2019, when he turned 40 with his Indian Wells success over Matthew Ebden (Australia).

It was Stan Wawrinka’s first victory in Shanghai since 2016, as well as his first ATP Masters 1000 success since Cincinnati in 2023. It was the Swiss’s 100th Masters victory, becoming the 12th player to do so.

In the second round of the tournament, he will face the 28th-seeded Flavio Cobolli (Italy), who is resting at the start of the tournament.
