Arthur Fils saved a match point to win the ATP 500 Japan Open title
Arthur Fils (France) saved a match point and won the ATP 500 Japan Open tennis tournament in Tokyo with a prize fund of 1.82 million USD. The French tennis player defeated his compatriot Ugo Humbert in the final with 2-1 (5:7, 7:6, 6:3) after a little more than three hours of play.
The left-handed Ugo Humbert recovered from an early break pass and went on to win the first set with a key second break in the 12th game. The second set was dominated by the serve, although Arthur Fils had to fight back in the eighth game from 0-40. In the tiebreak, Ugo Humbert was within a point of victory at 6-5 on his own serve, but his opponent took three straight points to equalize the sets.
In the decisive third set, the 20-year-old Arthur Fils managed one break for 5:3 before closing out the match with his 10th ace, snapping his four-match losing streak against his compatriot to claim his third career title and second of the season after the triumph in Hamburg in July.
Ugo Humbert, who guaranteed himself a rise to the 15th place in the world ranking, lost for the first time in the ATP Tour final after six consecutive successes. He was left with two trophies during the season in Marseille and in Dubai in February.
