Paula Badosa defeated second-seeded Jessica Pegula to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open
Paula Badosa (Spain) advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open after defeated the second-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:0) in only 64 minutes of play.
The 15th-seeded Spanish tennis player made five double faults and did not scored a single ace and had only 38% success on the first serve, but won 95% of the points on it and also was very strong in long shots. Although her opponent scored four aces, she was not able to save a single of the five breakpoints and won only 44% of her first-serve points.
The match started strongly for Jessica Pegula, who broke in the third game to take a lead of 2:1 and immediately extended her lead to 3:1 after winning her next service game. However, since then the American player lost rhythm and won only one more game by the end of the match. Paula Badosa broke twice in the first set to close it at 6:4 and three times in the second set to win it on 6:0.
In the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open, Paula Badosa will face Shuai Zhang (China), who is world’s No 595 but eliminated 23rd-seeded Magdalena Frech (Poland) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:2) in 1:32 hours of play.
