Hubert Hurkacz defeated Marcos Giron in a three-set battle at the start of the ATP 500 Japan Open
The second-seeded Hubert Hurkacz (Poland) had a tough start at the ATP 500 Japan Open in Tokyo. The Polish tennis player won his opening match in the tennis tournament versus Marcos Giron (USA) by 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 6:4) in 2:08 hours.
Hubert Hurkacz was first to reach a breakpoint in the third game of the first set, but his opponent saved it. None of the players succeeded to break until the 10th game of the set, in which the Polish tennis player received two breakpoints at 15-40 and won the game already in the first opportunity. Thus, he closed the set at 6:4.
The second set started equally with both players winning their serve games. Hubert Hurkacz succeeded to break in the fourth game and took a comfortable lead of 3:1, but his opponent returned the break immediately and later equalized to 3:3. Without any more breaks and even breakpoint by the end, the set entered into a tiebreak. Marcos Giron took the initiative from the very beginning and although Hubert Hurkacz equalized to 3-3, eventually the American player won by 7-5 and equalized the sets.
In the third decisive set, the Polish tennis player made an early break and took a lead of 2:0. He had two breakpoints in the third game, but missed all of them and Marcos Giron succeeded to win his serve. However, none of the players gave any break point by the end of the set and Hubert Hurkacz won it by 6:4.
The next opponent for the Polish tennis player will be the winner between the US Open semi-finalist Jack Draper (Great Britain) and qualifier Mattia Bellucci (Italy).
Meanwhile, Ugo Humbert (France) defeated wildcard Shintaro Mochizuki (Japan) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:2), while Matteo Berrettini (Italy) defeated Botic Van De Zandschulp (Netherlands) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4). Mariano Navone (Argentina) also achieved a straight-set victory versus Luciano Darderi (Italy) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:4).
