Qinwen Zheng reached the US Open quarterfinals for the second year in a row
The Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng reached the US Open quarterfinals for the second year in a row. The 7th-seeded Chinese player defeated the 24th-seeded Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 2-1 (7:6(2), 4:6, 6:2) after nearly three hours of play.
The first set passed with the advantage of the servers and it came to a tiebreak, in which the Chinese woman led with 4:1 points and did not allow a turn. In the second part, Vekic squandered an early break lead, but in the tenth game he got another break and leveled the score. Zheng, runner-up at the Australian Open in January, opened with a break in the deciding third set, then broke in the seventh game to seal the victory.
The Chinese woman will try to reach the semifinals of “Flushing Meadows” for the first time in a match against the second-seeded and last season’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus).
Aryna Sabalenka eliminated the 33rd-seeded Elise Mertens (Belgium) after 2-0 (6:2, 6:4). She is looking for a fourth consecutive Grand Slam semifinal in New York
