Elena Rybakina misses WTA 1000 China Open and WTA 1000 Wuhan Open tennis tournaments
The 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) withdrew from the WTA 1000 China Open and WTA 1000 Wuhan Open tennis tournaments due to back problems, but will try to return to the court for the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November.
The world’s number four had plenty of success in the first half of 2024, winning titles at the WTA 500 Brisbane International, WTA 500 Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, and WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, but also was the runner-up at the WTA 1000 Miami Open and WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open, as well as reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon. However, she missed several tournaments recently due to illness and injuries.
After reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon, she withdrew from the Paris Olympics with bronchitis and the US Open in August with a back injury after winning her first match.
“Due to an ongoing back injury, I unfortunately have to withdraw from the upcoming Asian tournaments. While I have been working hard on my recovery, my medical team and I have decided that it is best to prioritize my health at this time”, said Elena Rybakina in a statement.
The Kazakhstani tennis player parted ways with her longtime coach Stefano Vukov just days before the US Open. She wants to play in the WTA Finals from November 2-9.
“It’s been a challenging year and I’m grateful for the support of the tournament organizers and all my fans. My team and I will work to get back on the court before the end of the season”, added Elena Rybakina.
