Carlos Alcaraz defeated Ben Shelton at Laver Cup, but Team Europe fell behind
The Team World again took the lead on the second day of the “Laver Cup” with 6-4 against the European team, after the teams exchanged one victory each in the late two matches.
First, Carlos Alcaraz prevailed by 2-0 (6:4, 6:4) over Ben Shelton (USA) and tied the score to 4-4, and according to the rules on the second day, each victory brings the team 2 points. In the late match in Berlin, Taylor Fritz regained the lead of the Team World after defeating Alexander Zverev (Germany) by 2-0 (6:4, 7:5).
Carlos Alcaraz, who already won this season with the Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles, was seriously dominating in the important moments. He saved five break points that opened up for the opposition. In turn, he broke Ben Shelton’s serve once in each set and took the match.
“First of all I want to say that I am happy to be part of the European team for the first time in my career. And I try to be the best in our squad to help as much as possible. Today I had a really tough match against a strong opponent. I had to play a solid match to win”, said Carlos Alcaraz after the match.
And earlier today, Frances Tiafoe (USA) also earned a win for the Team World, defeating Daniil Medvedev (Russia).
Taylor Fritz played with Alexander Zverev for almost two hours, taking the lead in the first set until the end, breaking to zero for 6:4. In the second set, the German player dominated at the beginning, led by 2:1 with a break, reflected two points in the next fourth game and drew 3:1. But after allowing an equalization for 4:4, his game lost rhythm and logically followed another breakthrough for 5:7.
