Daniil Medvedev: Jannik Sinner is one of the best in the world and he deserves it
Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev said he is enjoying his growing rivalry with world’s number one Jannik Sinner, despite losing to the Italian in the US Open quarter-finals.
Daniil Medvedev has faced the 23-year-old Jannik Sinner four times this year, also losing in the final of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of the ATP 1000 Miami Open, but won in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon.
“It’s been tough for me lately, but compared to some games I played with him last year when he started beating me, I felt like I was doing the right things. I just wasn’t able to execute them well. I like it. You know, having big rivalries like this always pushes me to be better. Sometimes I lose, sometimes I’ll try to be better next time and that’s the only thing I can do”, commented Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev still leads the head-to-head 7-6, although Jannik Sinner has won six of the last seven matches between them.
“He is one of the best in the world and he deserves it. Yannick is a tough opponent. He feels the game well. Many times he chooses the right shot at the right moment. I actually like playing tennis players like him because that’s when it’s the most difficult and every point matters”, continued Daniil Medvedev.
He reckons he has enjoyed a “pretty good” year in the Grand Slams.
“There have always been tough opponents. You just have to train hard, try to improve your game and try to beat them”, concluded Daniil Medvedev.
