Alexander Zverev is highly disappointed that missed a big chance to win his first Grand Slam title
German tennis player Alexander Zverev left the US Open in the quarterfinals after defeat by American Taylor Fritz and did not hide his regret that he missed a good opportunity to finally win his first Grand Slam title.
Taylor Fritz won by 3-1 (7:6(2), 3:6, 6:4, 7:6(3)) to advance to the semi-finals, and Alexander Zverev admitted that age is now a factor too.
The German tennis player turned 27 on April 20, and will be approaching 28 when he next goes after a Grand Slam trophy in January in Australia. Only two tennis players have managed to win their first Slam title at a similar age or older in the last 25 years – Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) and Goran Ivanisevic (Croatia).
Alexander Zverev has two Grand Slam finals in his career – in 2020 at the US Open and this year at Roland Garros, and in 2024 he was also a semi-finalist in Australia.
“I haven’t won a single title. I don’t care about the rest. I’m 27 years old and I’ll be 28 next year”, said the tennis player, who has an Olympic gold medal, two ATP Finals titles and the most wins in 2024, but has yet to win any of the four Slams. New York provided him with an almost unique opportunity to reach the trophy after the first-week eliminations of Carlos Alcaraz and 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.
“The door to the final was open, maybe that slowed him down”, former German tennis player and current television analyst Boris Becker said for Alexander Zverev, who expressed his own disappointment after the match with Taylor Fritz.
“It was just terrible on my part”, replied Alexander Zverev. “I don’t remember hitting a backhand that bad since I’ve been on Tour. Just absolutely terrible on my part. The forehand was OK. The serve was OK, but my most reliable shot, the one I’m most familiar with and the one that to wake me up at 3:00, I wouldn’t miss it, he was absolutely not present today. To be honest, I’m speechless”, continue the German tennis player.
“I didn’t know what else to do. At one point I had so many questions in my head. I had no idea if I should continue like this or if I should leave the ball on the court. I don’t have any answers right now”, concluded Alexander Zverev.
