Carlos Alcaraz: I was playing against myself and my thoughts
Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, who crashed out in the second round of the US Open after defeat by Botic van de Zandschulp (Netherlands), said he was fighting with himself during the match.
“In tennis you play against someone who wants the same thing as you – to win. You have to be as calm as possible to try to do things well. Today I played against an opponent, but also against myself and my thoughts. There were a lot of emotions, which I couldn’t control”, admitted the 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz.
“I think I improved my level at one point in the fight, but it wasn’t enough to win or at least give myself a chance to get into the match. So, you know… what can I say? I didn’t feel comfortable and I think, that I made a lot of mistakes. When I wanted to come back, or at least I thought so, it was too late”, said the Spanish tennis player. “I came to New York with less energy than I thought I would come with. But I don’t want to use that as an excuse. I’m probably a person or a player who needs more days or a break before big tournaments. I have to think about it and learn lessons”, concluded he.
Botic van de Zandschulp, who had not beaten a Top 10 player at a Grand Slam, commented: “Maybe I’m still figuring it out. It’ll take me a few hours or I’ll probably feel more emotional than that tomorrow, which happened”.
Van de Zandshulp will face Jack Draper in the third round of the US Open.
“Draper is a really good tennis player. He is having a good season this year. It will be a really tough match. I am looking forward to the rest of the tournament. I think everyone else in the draw is amazing players and every match will be tough”, added Botic van de Zandschulp.
