WADA confirmed that Jannik Sinner will not be punished for doping

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has confirmed that it will not appeal the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) decision not to disqualify world number one in men’s tennis Jannik Sinner (Italy), the organization said.

As is well known, the Italian gave two positive doping tests during the Masters series tournament in Indian Wells (USA) in March. Jannik Sinner avoided disqualification, but at the same time was stripped of ranking points and prize money earned in that race.

WADA’s refusal to appeal means the Italian will not be found guilty of an anti-doping rule violation.

The 23-year-old Jannik Sinner has been at the top of the ATP English rankings since June. The Italian has 16 titles from tournaments under the organization’s auspices. On Sunday, the Italian became the champion of the US Open, and in January he also triumphed in the Australian Open.

In 2023, Jannik Sinner also won the Davis Cup with the Italian team.

The Italian tested positive for a banned substance earlier this year. The substance detected was in minimum amounts, and Jannik Sinner claims it entered his body inadvertently. His defense was supported by detailed scientific evidence which convinced the tribunal of his innocence.

The tribunal’s decision, announced last month, found Jannik Sinner not guilty. The Italian was allowed to continue racing while the case was pending.

The Italian should participate in a tournament in Beijing (China), which will start on September 23.
