Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner is an Italian tennis player and current world number one. He has won 16 singles titles on the ATP Tour, including two majors at the 2024 Australian Open and the 2024 US Open, where he became the first Italian man to win the Open. He has also won three Masters 1000 titles. He was a runner-up at the ATP Finals and led Italy to the 2023 Davis Cup crown, its first since 1976.
Jannik Sinner is ranked the world No 1 in singles by the ATP, the first Italian player in history to reach the top ranking.
Jannik Sinner was born on August 16, 2001, in Innichen, South Tyrol, Italy. He began both skiing and playing tennis at age three. He was one of Italy’s top junior skiers from seven to twelve years old, winning a national championship in giant slalom at age seven in 2008 and becoming a national runner-up at age eleven in 2012. that is why he gave up tennis at the age of seven for about a year, before returning back to the sport. However, he was forced to concentrate on tennis due to his physique. During his junior career, Jannik Sinner won the titles at the Antonio Hernandez Cup S-14 and J4 Doha \ Qatar ITF Junior Open in 2017 but also was the runner-up at the Italy F23 Futures in 2018.
Jannik Sinner turned professional in 2018, playing at the ITF tournaments in Egypt and Italy. During the season he reached his first final at the Italy F23 Futures.
In 2019, he won his first Challenger 80 title at Bergamo Challenger, but during the season triumphed at M25 Trento 01, M25 Santa Margherita Di Pula 02, Lexington Challenger and was the runner-up at the Ostrava Challenger. Jannik Sinner made his ATP debut at the ATP 250 Hungarian Open and later played with wild card at the ATP 1000 Rome Open, reaching second rounds of both tournaments. He debuted also in the Grand Slam tournament, but was knocked out in the first round of the US Open. In October, he reached the semi-finals of the ATP 250 European Open in Antwerp, while in November won the titles at the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals and Ortisei Challenger. Following the great season, Jannik Sinner entered in the ATP Top 100 for the first time and ended at world’s No 78.
Jannik Sinner first attracted attention of the fans in 2020, reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open / Roland Garros. Later during the season he won his first ATP title at the ATP 250 Sofia Open. Thus, he ended the season in world’s Top 50.
In 2021, Jannik Sinner continue with his great performance and started the season by winning another title at the ATP 250 Great Ocean Road Open. In March, he played in his first Masters’ final at the ATP 1000 Miami Open, but lost to Hubert Hurkacz (Hungary). By the end of the season he won three more titles at the ATP 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, ATP 250 Sofia Open and ATP 250 European Open in Antwerp. He finished the season as world’s number 10 and played in the Nitto ATP Finals, but with one loss and one win did not overcome the group stage.
Jannik Sinner won only one title in 2022, triumphing at the ATP 250 Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag. Although did not won other titles during the season, he reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US open, as well as fourth round of the French Open / Roland Garros. He also played in the quarter-finals of the ATP 1000 Miami Open, ATP 1000 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, ATP 1000 Rome Open, and ATP 500 Erste Bank Open. At the end, he fell to world’s No 15 and did not participated at the ATP Finals.
In 2023, Jannik Sinner already gained enough experience and settled in world’s Top 10. He won the ATP 250 Open Sud de France, ATP 1000 Canadian Open / Rogers Cup, ATP 1000 China Open, ATP 500 Erste Bank Open, was the runner-up at the ATP 500 ABN AMRO Open and ATP 1000 Miami Open, but also reached the semi-finals ATP 1000 Indian Wells Open, ATP 1000 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, and Wimbledon. The finished the season as world’s No 4 and played at the ATP Finals, where reached the final and lost to Novak Djokovic.
In 2024, Jannik Sinner won his first Grand Slam title, triumphing first at the Australian Open and later in the US Open. He also triumphed at the ATP 500 ABN AMRO Open, ATP 1000 Miami Open, and ATP 1000 Cincinnati Open, as well as reached the semi-finals of the French Open / Roland Garros and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. Jannik Sinner climbed to world’s number one on June 9, 2024.
