Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Japan Open
Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito stunned the eight-seeded Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy) to qualify for the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Japan Open in Osaka. The Japanese player won the match in straight sets by 2-0 (6:4, 6:3) in lass than an hour and a half.
Both players exchanged five breaks in the first set, three in favor of Aoi Ito and two for Elisabetta Cocciaretto, as well as three breaks in the second sets (2-1 in favor of the Japanese player), which brought the victory to the Japanese player.
This was the second WTA main draw win for Aoi Ito, who earlier in the tournament eliminated the 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin (USA) after a comeback by 2-1 (2:6, 6:3, 7:5).
In the quarter-finals of the tournament, Aoi Ito will face the German LuckyLoser Eva Lys, who made a fantastic win over McCartney Kessler (USA) by 2-1 (7:6, 3:6, 7:5).
In the other matches from the day, Suzan Lamens (Netherlands) eliminated Lucia Bronzetti (Italy) after 2-0 (6:3, 6:4) and Clara Tauson (Denmark) defeated Harriet Dart (Great Britain) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2).
