Jannik Sinner won the US Open 2024 title
Jannik Sinner (Italy) won the US Open 2024 title after defeating Taylor Fritz (USA) by 3-0 (6:3 6:4 7:5). He is the first Italian tennis player to become the US Open champion.
It was Jannik Sinner’s second Grand Slam title of the year, making him one of only four players to do so in the past 50 years. It is also interesting that since the beginning of the year, the Italian has won three tournaments in the USA alone – in Miami, in Cincinnati, and now at the Open Championship in New York.
Of course, for another night, the Grand Slam match had its stellar representation. One of the bright personalities who was noticed on the stands was the singer Taylor Swift. She has her own history at the tournament, as she made a musical appearance in 2002 singing “God Bless America” at just 13 years old.
The cup was handed to the winner personally by the tennis legend – Andre Agassi. It was Agassi who won the tournament exactly 25 years ago. In an all-American final a quarter of a century ago in 1999, he defeated Todd Martin in an epic five-set match that finished 6:4 6:7(5) 6:7(2) 6:3 6:2.
Today’s US Open final started strongly for Jannik Sinner, who struck at the ambitions of Taylor Fritz after an early break, leaving no chance for his opponent in the second game, in which he served and won it 40-0. However, the American tennis player showed that he would not give up and in his turn not only made a break but also won the fifth game, with which he entered the role of leader for the first time since the beginning of the match. The joy for the home crowd in the stands ended there, as the Italian also produced a turnover after making two breaks in a row and winning the set by 6:3.
The dominance of Jannik Sinner continued at the beginning of the second set when he won his fifth consecutive game. However, the set was equal until the tenth game of the set, when Taylor Fritz lost his serve and the Italian player triumphed in the set with 6:4.
Jannik Sinner served first in the third set as well, in which both players went close to each other. The Italian player took the lead despite trailing 0-40 early in the first game, and then Taylor Fritz equalized. The American tennis player was first to break in the seventh game and after winning his serve had a comfortable lead of 5:3. However, Jannik Sinner won his serve game and then broke twice the serve of his opponent to close the set at 7:5 and win the match.
Taylor Fritz was better in the serves after recording 10 aces, against 6 for his opponent, who made more double faults – 6 vs 4. The American tennis player also registered more winners (29-23), but also more unforced errors (34-21).
